Voted Auckland’s Most Popular Hostel 4 Years In A Row!

Welcoming budget accommodation groups to Auckland

Budget groups often struggle to find good quality affordable accommodation in the heart of any city – let alone the Auckland CBD. There are certainly options of renting self contained apartments or whole houses, but few are located right in the city centre and most options are limited to 2-4 bedrooms and therefore are not really suitable for groups.

One of the few silver linings from Covid is that good quality hostels now have beds available to provide budget accommodation for New Zealander’s. Attic Backpackers, Auckland CBD’s top rating hostel and a 4 time winner of Hostelworld’s ‘Most Popular Hostel in Auckland’ is one of those properties.

Attic is located just 50 metres away from Queen Street on the top floor of the historic T&G Building. Its fantastic location is directly above the popular Elliot Stables eateries and just a short walk away from the universities, Sky Tower, waterfront, entertainment precincts, art gallery and even Spark Arena is within walking distance if attending a concert or event. Furthermore, Attic’s top floor location and coded entry makes it a much safer option than most budget hotels and by not selling alcohol onsite, Attic isn’t regarded as a ‘party hostel’. Guests are encouraged to go out and have a great time but to respect their fellow guests when returning at night.

With New Zealand’s borders closed for the foreseeable future to international visitors, kiwi’s are now looking to travel around their own country and Auckland as New Zealand’s largest city is an ideal weekend, event or holiday destination.  Furthermore, they discovered that kiwi’s love travelling as a family, community, sporting group or joining a group of friends to attend an event or enjoy a weekend away in the ‘big smoke’ of Auckland. These groups are looking for a great location, a clean environment with good facilities, friendly staff but at an affordable rate.

Attic also discovered that kiwi’s – whilst very happy to book a dorm bed and stay in hostels during their OE, generally preferred to travel together and stay in their own private room when travelling around New Zealand. Research indicated that staying in hostels was therefore similar to kiwi’s love of camping – happy to mix with other campground guests, share bathrooms and kitchens – but wanting their own tent to sleep in.

Attic management commented “We have known since opening that Attic Backpackers is the top rating CBD hostel as ranked by international backpackers but we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Attic also meets the exact same needs for kiwi’s. We just needed to adjust how we delivered our beds as kiwi’s generally prefer their own rooms. Apart from that, a safe, comfortable, friendly environment with good shared facilities and a great location is valued equally by both our international and domestic guests.

As such, Attic has pivoted how we sell our beds. Guests can now not only book individual beds but can now also book entire ‘private dorms’ to suit the individual size and make up of their group.

Our guests love that they can book a room that perfectly suits the bedding requirements of their group – we offer a range of room sizes including single, twin and double rooms plus our 4 bed, 5 bed, 6 bed, 8 bed, 10 bed and 12 bed dorms (subject to availability). We also have a 14 bed dorm but this isn’t available online as a private dorm option. With a total of 105 beds the hostel is a perfect mid sized hostel shared living space and caters equally well for individuals, smaller and larger groups. Bed linen is included.

Within the hostel there are 3 common areas to relax, large mens and ladies bathrooms including hairdryers, a shared kitchen and dining area that opens onto a covered outdoor terrace and all with the added safety of a top floor location and coded entry. The hostel has a laundry onsite with new machines installed in 2019 and free fibre wifi is provided for all guests.
It really is a good budget accommodation option in the heart of Auckland for individual travelers and groups alike.
