Attic: First NZ Hostel to Reach Level 2 Sustainability

Good news: your stay at Attic now comes with bragging rights – we’re officially NZ’s first Level 2 sustainable hostel.

Hostel Manager + Owner

Sustainable travel isn’t just a buzzword anymore – it’s how the world is moving. And here at Attic Backpackers in Auckland, we’re proud to say we’re leading the way.

We’re officially the first hostel in New Zealand to achieve Level 2 status in Hostelworld’s Staircase to Sustainability.

The Staircase to Sustainability is Hostelworld’s global framework for recognising hostels that care about their environmental and social impact. Level 1 covers the basics like recycling and reducing waste. Level 2 means a hostel is actively measuring its impact, creating long-term plans, and embedding sustainability into daily operations.

For travellers, it’s a sign that when you stay with us, you’re supporting a hostel that values:

  • Responsible travel
  • Environmental care
  • Local community support
Why It Matters

Being first in New Zealand to reach Level 2 is more than just a badge for us – it’s about setting the standard. We want backpacking in Aotearoa to be about discovery and respect: for the land, the people, and future travellers who’ll come after you.

Travel Better With Attic

By staying at Attic, you’re choosing a hostel that’s committed to doing things right. From reducing waste to supporting local businesses, we’re proving that small steps add up to big change.
